Current column talks of humanities, but consider the 1990s-2000s when the #InformationSystems academics talked at global conferences about their situation being analogous to re-arranging deck chairs as the Titanic was going down (e.g. at the 1997 Indiana-Indianapolis AIS global conference). It is #paradoxical that the foundational discipline of all #applications of #IT, #InformationSystems, disappeared from the U.S. #academia during the era of exponential growth of #applications of #IT (with birth of the WWW in 1993-94) in every sphere of U.S. national and global practices: https://lnkd.in/ejyWRtK.
The phenomena seems to characterize the ‘in vogue’ #STEM disciplines as well, as the foundational discipline of #STEM #applications, #Physics, which disappeared from U.S. #academia a decade earlier, with #Physicists heading to #WallStreet and building and heading #FinancialEngineering & #QuantitativeFinance practices from #StatisticalPhysics and #AppliedMath.
