#First #Real #Space #War: We’re in the midst of the first real space war in which #corporate #players are exerting major influence over the action on the ground. Earth’s #orbit is now the domain of companies, not just countries, and that’s changing the# nature of #warfare. #Digital #FutureOfWarfare #SpaceWars: #SpaceX’s #satellites are part of its #Starlink #network, which beams down high-speed #internet service to #antennas on Earth. When #Russia invaded #Ukraine, Starlink exhibited an unexpected power over #global #politics. The Russian #military’s initial offensive focused on destroying #communications #systems throughout the country. Starlink allowed the Ukrainian #government and #military to maintain contact during this crucial period, as they repelled Russia’s opening salvos while facilitating Ukrainian #drone #flights and #precision #missile #strikes.
Musk and SpaceX were hailed as heroes, but more recently their roles in the war have come into question. As Ukrainian forces advance deeper into Russian-occupied regions, they’ve reported that Starlink has been turned off in these areas. In addition, SpaceX briefly requested that the US and its allies foot much more of the bill for Starlink in Ukraine, later pledging to keep funding much of the operation, including the purchase of #antennas and the #telecommunications #services needed to run them.

US officials have grown uncomfortable over Musk’s recent threat to stop supplying the Starlink satellite service to Ukraine and what they see as his increasingly Russia-friendly stance… They are also concerned by his plans to buy Twitter with a group of #foreign #investors.
Widely known as the CEO of #electric #automaker #Tesla Inc., Musk is no stranger to Washington, where he is a major player in #government #contracts. Musk forced his way into the business of #military and #intelligence #satellite #launches after #lobbying vigorously in #Congress and #suing the #USAirForce for the right to #compete with a longstanding joint venture of #defense #contractors #Boeing Co. and #Lockheed Martin Corp.
SpaceX flies #astronauts to #International #Space #Station as part of a long-standing partnership with #NASA and launches #top #secret #satellites for the #Pentagon. The USAID, has also paid for some of SpaceX’s Starlink satellites that have made their way to Ukraine.
