How NJ 12-Year-Old Became Youngest Chess Grandmaster Ever: Abhimanyu Mishra and his father booked one-way tickets to Hungary for a chance at history. “My work is a game, a very serious game.”: ‘You will never be 12 years old again.’: https://lnkd.in/eetJqZsg: “We came here to play chess… I’d love to see Budapest, but there was no time. Every day there was a game.” Becoming a grandmaster had been the goal for more than half of his life. “Nineteen years is too much in our modern world where we see new records, new talents every half a year.”
Mishra shook the chess community at age 12 because by then he had already been playing the game for a decade. His father taught him how the pieces moved when he was two. By the time Abhi was five, he was competing in tournaments. Mishra was an American prodigy before he was an international prodigy. At 7 years old, he was the youngest national expert. At 9 years old, he was the youngest national master. And he became an international master, one notch below GM, before his 11th birthday. At that point, there was one more natural move. Abhi would try to become the youngest grandmaster chess had ever seen. “It’s a lifetime opportunity…”
“There’s no time to miss it. If I keep thinking about these kinds of things, I’m not going to be able to do my work… But having not so many friends…after going back, I’ll try to improve this.”
